The Matador III — Wootz Damascus Collector’s Knife

The Matador III is a compact handmade knife with a strong, composed profile and materials selected for their individual character. Only two pieces are currently available.

Its 150 mm blade is forged from imported Wootz Damascus steel and acid-etched to reveal a dark snowflake pattern. The blackened surface gives the blade a restrained appearance, while the shifting pattern in the steel ensures that no two examples look exactly alike. With a blade width of 35 mm and a thickness of 4 mm, the knife has a substantial feel without becoming oversized. The finished blade is hardened to approximately 60–62 HRC.

At 240 mm overall, the Matador III is proportioned for collectors who appreciate a shorter fixed blade with a solid presence in the hand. The transition from blade to handle is framed in 304 stainless steel, adding strength and a clean contrast to the darker natural materials.

The handle combines stabilized mammoth molar with stabilized nanmu wood. Mammoth molar is prized for its layered coloration and organic pattern, formed over thousands of years. Its grain varies from piece to piece, giving each handle a distinct appearance. The nanmu wood adds warmth and a quieter texture, balancing the mineral-like character of the molar. Stabilization improves the resistance of both materials to moisture and everyday changes in temperature.

A knife of this kind deserves a sheath made with the same level of attention. The Matador III comes with a hand-tooled sheath made from imported, full-grain vegetable-tanned cowhide. The carved leather develops its own patina over time and offers a fitting way to store or display the knife.

The name “Matador” suits the design: controlled, confident, and dramatic without unnecessary ornament. This third-generation edition refines that idea through its dark Wootz blade, compact proportions, and uncommon handle materials.

Each Matador III is handmade rather than mass-produced. Small variations in the Damascus pattern, mammoth molar, wood grain, and leather tooling are part of the piece and should be expected. They are also what make each knife personal.
